Paper Plane Competition

A self-critique of design process

At the early stage of this project, as we were only briefed about the Cube, it was really difficult for me to visualize the multi-touch screens and the environment described, but after watching the sample applications, actually visiting the Cube, and conducting the initial analysis it became much easier to think about the possible applications for Cube, and I started to think about a wide range of contents that can be delivered using this environment. However, there was still one challenging question to answer: Why the Cube?, there are many other devices with multi-touch screens available today, such as iPhone or iPad, and I had to look for the answer that how my application is going to benefit from the unique features that the Cube offers.

Eventually I came up with the idea to develop an Origami game for this environment to enable the users to learn how to create Origami and even allow them to create free style Origami. At this stage the problem that I was facing, was that the idea was too abstract, and I needed to have more details on how the actual application is going to work, what would be the steps, and final results. After going through consultations and receiving feed backs, I decided to concentrate on a specific type of Origami, which is paper plane, and add competitive elements. These were the challenges faced throughout different stages of designing this application; I was also facing some problems with the technical issues of implementing the prototype. I have used the green screening technique to prepare the final presentation. We were introduced to Adobe After Effect software as the tool to edit the videos, the problem was I had never used this application before, and it was a huge challenge for me to learn it very quickly, eventually I learned about the web site (http://www.videocopilot.net/) which includes useful tutorials and finally I managed to pick up the basics to deliver the presentation, and I only wish I had more time to spend to learn more and improve the quality of the final video.

I have learned a great deal on how to communicate my ideas and how to prepare a prototype, it was also great to learn how to approach a future focused project.
